Using pomade: control for a combed direction

Pomade is often used for a combed, controlled direction and can create a natural to glossy finish depending on the product. The direction you want, not the jar, determines how to apply it.

Set the direction first

Decide whether hair should move backwards, along a parting or loosely sideways. Comb or shape the foundation in that direction before assessing the finish. Product can support direction but cannot solve every length issue.

For a new style, ask how the front length and crown should lie together. This matters particularly with a slick back or pompadour.

Choose shine as an intentional finish

Explain whether you prefer natural, light or obvious shine. Shine and hold are not identical: also ask how movable the hair should remain.

Use a small amount and distribute it from back to front or across the whole top, depending on the intended image. Add only where the shape asks for it.

Practise the routine you actually use

Test whether you can reset the haircut with a comb, fingers or both when it shifts. A beautiful tight form you cannot recreate is less useful than a slightly looser result that fits your day.

Ask your barber not only to apply product but to name the steps. You can then repeat the direction at home.
