Comparing styles
Undercut or blended sides: disconnected or smoothly connected?
An undercut deliberately separates the longer top from a shorter section. With blended sides, lengths gradually connect. Neither is better: the choice is about what you want to see when hair hangs loose, is swept aside or grows out.
Look at the visible connection
Choose an undercut if a clear boundary appeals to you or you want the top to hang above a short area. Choose a blend if you want the shape to move from top to side without a break.
Show a reference in the way you genuinely wear your hair. An undercut can look far more visible when the top is loose or swept back than in a carefully styled photograph.
Discuss the side separately from the top
With a blend, you decide how high the transition sits and how much weight remains above it. With an undercut, you decide where the shorter zone begins and its contrast with the top. Both need more detail than “short at the sides”.
Explain whether you want to tie the top back or let it fall over the sides. That determines where useful top length needs to remain.
Think about a later change
If you want to move from a pronounced undercut to connected sides later, the short section needs time to grow or the top needs adjustment. Mention that goal if you are already in a grow-out stage.
A blend grows out too, but often keeps the impression of a connected shape longer. Choose based on what you want to see in the mirror, not a fixed maintenance timeline.
