Low fade: choosing and explaining a lower transition
A low fade keeps the transition from very short to longer hair low around the sides and back. More hair remains visible above that transition. The name mainly describes placement: it does not settle how short the bottom should be or what happens to the top.
Decide where you want to see the transition
Look at a reference from the side and the back. A front-facing photograph reveals little about the height behind the ear. Point out where the short area ends and where you want a darker, fuller area to begin. That gives your barber more information than asking only for a “low fade”.
A lower transition leaves more room for hair on the upper sides. Discuss whether that area should retain weight or look less rounded. Fade height and the amount of volume above it are separate decisions; a low transition does not have to produce heavy sides.
Low does not automatically mean down to skin
You might want a visible short shadow at the bottom or an area finished down to skin. Ask your barber to explain the difference before choosing that length. If the gentle blend is what you like in a reference, you do not have to copy its shortest setting as well.
If very close shaving has felt uncomfortable before, explain what happened and where. The appearance you want and what feels comfortable on your skin are separate considerations. Discuss a less close finish when unsure; a reference photograph should not override that preference.
Match the top to your everyday routine
A low fade can accompany a short or longer top. Decide separately whether you wear it forwards, sideways or backwards. With curls or waves, show how your hair normally sits dry, so the connection to the sides is assessed beyond a tightly styled finish.
Growth becomes visible in the short lower area. Styling product can reset the top, but it cannot restore a freshly cut transition. Arrange maintenance when the grow-out starts bothering you rather than adopting a fixed timetable from someone else’s haircut.
