Comparing styles

French crop or Caesar cut: loose texture or a controlled fringe?

Both hairstyles wear the top forwards with a short fringe, but they emphasise different effects. A French crop often has more visible, separated texture. A Caesar cut usually creates a calmer, more even impression at the front edge. In practice they can overlap, so show the effect you want.

Decide how the fringe should look

Move towards a French crop if separated pieces or a broken edge appeal to you. Move towards a Caesar if you want a calmer, more compact front. Neither automatically means the edge must be hard or perfectly straight.

Indicate where you want the fringe to sit while looking ahead. The same length falls in a different place with straight, wavy and curly hair.

Explain what texture means to you

“Texture” can mean less bulk, an irregular edge or product-styled separated pieces. Explain which you mean and where you want density retained. This prevents a controlled crop being made too thin or a loose crop staying too heavy.

Ask to see the shape without excessive product during the appointment. A good cut foundation should not need a thick layer of styling product to remain recognisable.

Choose the sides independently

A French crop or Caesar can work with soft sides or a pronounced fade. Copy the transition from a reference only if you want it too; it is separate from the forward top.

In the final result, look at the corners beside the fringe. They determine how the front meets the temples and can make the shape more angular or softer.
