Beard under the chin: deciding bottom weight and profile

Hair beneath the chin influences how a beard looks from the side and below. It can create a fuller profile but also collect weight. Discuss the underside separately from cheeks and moustache.

View the profile, not only the front

Lift your chin and look at a side view. Indicate how much length may remain under the jaw and where the form can sit closer to the skin or jaw. You can barely see that proportion from the front.

A reference ideally shows the underside or profile too; otherwise a large part of the shape remains undiscussed.

Choose between retaining and reducing mass

You can retain length under the chin while reducing weight elsewhere. Or make the underside more compact without cutting the cheeks very short. State the choice per zone.

A neckline is the lower boundary of the beard, but is not the same as how much volume remains above it. Discuss both.

Check in movement

At the final check, view it with chin lifted and normal, then turn slightly to the side. You can see whether the underside fits the form you want to wear.

Explain how you comb or brush at home so the bottom works in your ordinary routine, not only neatly in the chair.
